Pada era pemerintahan Presiden Jokowi scara masif melakukan pembangunan di wilayah Timur. Dengan pembangunan tersebut membuktikan bahwasanya negara hadir di Wlayah Timur sehingga tidak menimbulkan stigma bahwa pembangunan hanya di Wilayah Barat saja. Di wilayah Timur khususnya Papua, Gerakan separatis masih terus membayangi Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia. Pendekatan pemerintahan Presiden Jokowi yang memulai pembangunan dari Indonesia Timur, termasuk Papua bisa dijadikan instrumen merespons gerakan separatis melalui pendekatan persuasif berupa pendekatan kesejahteraan.
Separatisme di Papua, meskipun jumlahnya makin kecil, ia tetap menjadi ancaman bagi stabilitas keamanan NKRI yaitu berpakaian sipil, tetapi bersenjata sehingga mengancam bukan saja rakyat, melainkan juga aparat.
Paling tidak terdapat tiga pendekatan untuk merespons gerakan separatisme, yakni pendekatan politik, pendekatan persuasif, dan pendekatan represif. Jika benar gerakan separatis berakar pada perasaan diperlakukan secara tidak adil dalam hal ekonomi, pendekatan persuasif yang juga perlu dilakukan pemerintah ialah pendekatan kesejahteraan.
Namun, negara tetap tidak boleh ragu melancarkan pendekatan represif kepada kelompok-kelompok separatis yang terus melakukan perlawanan, yang tidak mau dengan pendekatan politik dan persuasif.
Pendekatan apa pun yang dilakukan negara terhadap gerakan separatis, apakah politik, persuasif, atau represif, negara harus bertujuan melindungi kedaulatan rakyat dan kewibawaan negara Indonesia, untuk itu kita sebagai warga negara harus tetap mendukung apapun yang sudah menjadi keputusan dalam menangani separatisme Papua.
Aktivitas gerakan separatis papua terus meningkat dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, termasuk melalui aksi yang dilakukan di dunia internasional. Semakin aktifnya Benny Wenda dalam kegiatan gerakan separatis Papua di internasional, dengan berupaya terus mencari kesempatan dan membangun opini dan pengaruh mereka. Pemerintah Indonesia berupaya merespons secara moderat untuk mencapai tujuannya dalam meredam dampak internasional yang diakibatkannya.
Opini yang mereka bangun cenderung menyudutkan pemerintah Indonesia dengan emutar balikan fakta tentang kejadian yang menimpa masyarakat Orang Asli Papua maupun Non Asli Papua seperti kejadian beberapa waktu lalu dimana seorang aktivis kemanuasiaan papua Michelle Kurisi dibunuh dengan kejam oleh KKB karena dituduh sebagai mata-mata.
Mencermati hal tersebut, diperlukan adanya kerjasama antara stakeholder dalam menangani aksi separatisme di Papua terlebih dalam hal meng counter berita yang salah tentang kejadian di Papua sehingga dapat memberikan informasi yang benar tentang Papua.
